Water

Water is our most precious resource. Not only is it essential for human life, it is needed for our economic prosperity, for business, industry and farmers. It also helps sustain the health of our rivers.

The Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability is responsible for developing and implementing sustainable urban water policy within NSW. We assist urban water utilities to deliver sustainable urban water services to their communities through a range of programs:

  • Implementing aspects of the Metropolitan Water Plan, which involves managing water recycling projects and Water Savings Action Plans, as well as providing financial assistance through the Water Savings Fund.
  • Managing the Country Towns Water Supply and Sewerage Program which involves providing technical, management and financial support to the State’s 107 local water utilities delivering water supply and sewerage services to country towns.
  • Giving technical and financial assistance to local water utilities during drought.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to improve the performance of water utility businesses, particularly in regard to pricing, business management and sustainable resource management.
  • Safety surveillance of local water utility dams.
